Guild Ball to the Death (clock)

Hello again gentle readers. Today I’m going to tell you about my first experience playing timed Guild Ball. For those of you who don’t know, Steamforged Games have a set of tournament rules for the beautifully violent game. If you want to check them out you’ll be able to find them on their Guild Ball forum (when it’s up and running again). They’re a great set of rules that give anyone the chance to run a tourney of their own. What we really wanted though, was the timings.

This was my opponent. He was conscious at the time. No, there’s not a huge amount of difference.

There are three different times that you can go with: 35, 45 or 50 mins per player. As it was our first time we decided to go with 50 minutes each. In the lead up to this I was getting a bit nervous as I’m normally quite a relaxed player and I like to take my time. Eventually though, it had to be done.

After a few teething problems, I'm really starting to love these guys. All hail King Midas!

I have to say, I had a great time. Managed to finish my first game after only using 25 mins. Really felt the pressure but it was kind of a buzz compered to the chilled out style we normally have. Not sure I’d want to play it like this every game but it was such a positive experience. I’ve mentioned the buzz but the other good thing was the focus. No chit-chat just the game. Making sure that you’re turn moves as quickly as possible (without messing up) and paying attention to what your opponent is doing in his turn while figuring out your next turn is challenging in a good way. It also gives GB a more frantic feel, mirroring the time constraint of a real sport. All in all, a fun way to play GB which I will definitely do again. Even if it is slightly exhausting.

Just think how much fun Season 2 will be. I CAN'T WAIT!

Have you played against the clock? Did you love it or hate it? How do you think your favoured team would fare in such a situation? Let us know and you could win an app for iOS that is perfect for Guild Ball timed play created by those great fellas over at Guild Ball Tonight. Fine, it’s free. Here you go. Don’t say I’m not nice.

Until next time gentle readers.

  1. Chuck up a couple of videos, timed games really make a difference.. eell I imagine they do, only played 4 games timed, my first 4 games, didn’t have a clue what I was doing so felt no pressure 🙂

    1. I’m sure we can manage that mate. Found it was also nice that I was playing against someone else so Straw was the ref. Helped the flow while I was being confused by the clock. Perhaps we’ll even try out the 35 minute game. I think we know our teams well enough…ish.

  2. More vids are being uploaded! Andy you are more demanding than my wife! Only a few parts left then it a quick unboxing of free goods sent to us! And an expensive Steamforged parcel! And then we have Engineers against Alchemists… and maybe if we get more free gifts some Parker and midget horse porn action…
